The rampant cases of suicide stories flooding over newspaper frontage is getting alarming and horrifying. In the last few days, stories of Ghanaian students and other citizens committing suicide have taken the nation aback and the trend, if not urgently managed properly, could be a recipe for disaster.
But, "the Doubting Thomases" may ask, "what is suicide?"
Suicide is the act of intentionally causing one's own death. The most commonly used method of suicide varies across cultures and partly related to the availability of effective means. Hanging, pesticide poisoning, firearms among others are common methods.
Risk Factors include mental disorders such as depression, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, personality disorders, alcoholism/substance misuse. Others are impulsive acts due to stress orchestrated by financial problems, academic difficulties, troubles with relationships, early childhood abuse etc.
It's important to note that those who have previously attempted suicide are at higher risk for future attempts and need to be monitored seriously.
According to the World Health Organization(WHO), suicide is the 10th leading cause of death worldwide. Though more women attempt suicide than men, the rates of completed suicides are generally higher in men as compared to their female compatriots.
There's an empirical evidence that, in any one person who committed suicide,  twenty others attempted it. WHO has predicted that 1.5million people will kill themselves by the year  2020. What a worrying situation!!!
What's the way forward???
Suicide prevention efforts should include limiting access to methods of the canker such as firearms and poisonous substances, treating mental disorders and regulating substance abuse.Additionally, improving economic conditions of people as well as policy formulations that provide availability of psychological/counselling services to the general public may do the magic. Indeed, it's time to revisit psychology as an effective tool for nation building by recognizing the role psychologists played in the historical antecedents of the world especially, during and after the first and second World and Wars. It's conspicuously clear that no nation can develop without putting the psychologist at the  center of its decision making process. Deliberately religating our  psychologists to the background at this crucial hour is a doom. The time to act is now for a stitch in time saves nine.

Our Vision

To make psychology one of the tools for nation building by bringing it to the doorsteps of all and sundry as successfully done in other jurisdictions.
